Course Requirements and Procedures

  1. Distribution of your grade: I will grade your course work using the following distribution:
    Homework: 15%
    Project (including oral presentation): 15%
    Midterm Examination I: 20%
    Midterm Examination II: 20%
    Final Examination: 30%

  2. Grading procedure: Your course-grade average will be calculated as the weighted average of the letter grades on your homework, project, your midterm exams, and your final exam. using the weight distribution given above.

  3. Homework: Homework will be assigned from questions at the end of the book sections and from class.

  4. Exam make-ups: If possible, you should give me prior notice if it is impossible for you to take an exam. No make-ups will be granted unless you produce satisfactory documentation to show an extenuating circumstance.

  5. Grading questions: If you have a question about a homework or exam grade, you should see me within one week of the day I return the graded work to you. You lose the right to re-grading after that.

  6. Incompletes: An grade of incomplete may be given to you in case circumstances beyond your control such as severe health problems or a death in the family make it impossible for you to complete a small portion of your class work. An incomplete may not be used as a shelter from a potentially low grade.

  7. Absences: Obtaining material (lecture notes, etc.) from missed classes is your responsibility.

  8. Academic dishonesty: The penalty may be a failing grade for the homework assignment or exam for all parties involved. More severe penalties are possible.

  9. Students with a disability: If you have special needs that must be accommodated to fulfill the course requirements, please notify me. The University has many resources available to assist you with your academic studies.

  10. Food and beverages: Beverages are allowed in class, but food is not.

  11. Accomodation of religious observances: I can make make reasonable accomodation for your religious beliefs. Please notify me within the first two weeks of classes about any scheduled class date that conflicts with a religious observance.

  12. Course withdrawal: Be mindful of the the last day to drop or withdraw from this course. This information appears in the course schedule.

  13. Collaboration: Unless requested by your instructor, the work you turn in must be your own, and not the work of anyone else. You are not to work jointly with or receive substantial assistance from anyone to do your homework or to finish in-class examinations.
